The Northern region of Portugal surprises with its wondrous landscapes, mountains, plateaus, valleys and an extraordinarily rich fauna and flora. This region of Portugal offers everyone the healthy experience of being immersed in nature and experience idyllic environments, marked by the diversity of natural resources and protected natural areas. The Minho and Trás-os-Montes are places where you will spend some relaxing vacations (or mini-vacations) in full communion with Nature.

Peneda Gerês National Park

Located in Portugal's Upper Northwest, bordering Spain, the Park of Peneda Gerês is a place of traditions and customs where people live largely from agriculture, herding and farming. This is Portugal's only national park and one of the greatest natural attractions in the country, for its scenic beauty, ecological and ethnographic value, and its variety of fauna and flora.

The Peneda-Gerês National Park extends from the plateau of Castro Laboreiro to Mourela, covering the mountain ranges of Peneda, Soajo, Amarela and Gerês. Discover this vast amphitheater, carved by geological conditions, winds and waters.

Extreme sports also have an important place both in the rivers, such as rafting in Gerês, and kitesurfing in the excellent coast near Viana do Castelo (http://www.visitportoandnorth.travel/Blog/Beaches- in-Porto-and-North-of-Portugal).

Meet a coastline with numerous beaches, lush mountains, stately homes, monuments and masterpieces of traditional and contemporary architecture, festivals, crafts, cuisine and Green Wine.

If you like golf, Minho offers you the much-needed peace for this sport, with great landscapes and facilities that rival the world's best, along with other excellent golf courses that you are able to find in Porto and Northern Portugal.

Sport and nature in Trás-os-Montes

Practice sport in the tramontane parks. Explore the Montesinho Mountain Ranges from Lombada on foot and bicycle or conveniently by car. In the Tramontane Northeast, the Montesinho Natural Park is one of the largest protected areas of Portugal, the perfect place to enjoy nature and country life, melding harmoniously into the scenery itself.

Leap to Douro International Natural Park, which covers some of the Trás-os-Montes counties, and relax in the region's thermal baths. You can explore the Douro Valley, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and enjoy the river, its historical and architectural heritage, savor the characteristic Port wine and recharge your batteries in its hotels, hostels (also known as pousadas) or rural lodging units.

The Douro region offers the best natural conditions for birdwatching (http://visitportoandnorth.travel/Porto-and-the-North/Visit/Artigos/Douro-International-Natural-Park) in Portugal. Sixty bird species have been confirmed nesting in the park, including rupicolous birds, i.e. birds that nest in rocks, such as the Egyptian vulture or Britango, chosen as the park's symbol.

From Douro's international cliffs, you can also observe other birds of prey, some of endangered species such as the Black Stork, the Golden Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, the Peregrine Falcon, the Alpine Swift and the Eagle Owl.

Come visit the North of Portugal and recharge your batteries in contact with nature. We are certain that these days will stay in your memory, just like the wisdom and the flavors of the region. Contact us for a custom plan that will carry you on making the most of your visit to our region.
