Porto is the ideal destination for someone looking to relax and discover a city full of life and culture, but who only has one weekend in which to do it all.
Because we want you to be able to make the most of all that Porto has to offer, we have suggested an itinerary of activities that will give you the chance to discover Porto in the best way possible in just two days.
On your first day, start with the Aliados Avenue (Avenida dos Aliados) and with Liberdade Square (Praça da Liberdade).
As you face the Town Hall (Edifício Paços do Concelho) you will find on your right the Bolhão Market (Mercado do Bolhão), Santa Catarina and the Batalha Square (Praça da Batalha) where you will find the São João National Theatre.
Return to Aliados Avenue and discover on your left hand side the neighbourhood of Baixa, the Clérigos tower (Torre dos Clérigos).
Here you will come across a huge, alternative variety of shops, fashion and design. Behind the Aliados Avenue is the São Bento station.
Take advantage of your first day in Porto to get to know the historic part of the city, dine in one of the traditional restaurants in the historic centre, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sample the famous Porto wine.
On your second day you can start by taking a stroll in Serralves Park, which has free entry on Sundays until 1.30pm. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art designed by Siza Vieira, the Villa and the tea house.
Next, go down Boavista Avenue (Avenida da Boavista) and stop at the Casa da Música which puts on classical music concerts every Sunday until noon, continue down the Avenue until you reach the sea where you can have lunch on the terrace of the Transparent Building (Edifício Transparente), next to the City Park (Parque da Cidade).
Here you can have your lunch while contemplating the view as you watch the world go by.
In the afternoon, return to the historic centre and in the Ribeira neighbourhood cross the D. Luis Bridge to go and have a drink in Cais de Gaia, at the Multimedia Centre of Porto Cruz (Centro Multimédia da Porto Cruz) which has a bar that specializes in Port wine cocktails.
Rest in one of the magnificent hotels that this city has to offer and make space in your calendar for a few days to return to this marvellous city and to discover more of the northern region that surrounds it.
