Porto: what not to miss, even on a tight schedule


The city of Porto is blessed with an abundance of historic sites and hidden gems for you to discover, even if you do not have a lot of time. Put a date in your diary because we are sure that, even by discovering just a slice of what Porto has to offer, you are guaranteed to take home lots of great memories.

So, let’s not waste any more time and let’s get started. Where to begin? Well, the Avenida dos Aliados is an excellent starting point. As Porto’s main avenue, this is where its inhabitants usually come to celebrate important events together.

Bolhão Market is a must-see during any stay in Porto. Founded in 1850, it is famous for both its architecture and the variety of products on offer. The market has two levels where you will find the city’s freshest products presented in the most original way.

Enjoy a stroll through Porto’s historic center and pass by the São Bento Station where you will find tile mosaics and large scale artworks that are certain to impress.

If you are a lover of literature then you cannot come to Porto without visiting Lello, which was included on The Guardian newspaper’s list of the 10 most beautiful bookstores in the world.

To get a panoramic view of the entire city, climb the Torre dos Clérigos. Here you will be able to see the city from a different perspective and the view is guaranteed to amaze.

One of the most interesting areas in Porto is by the riverside and this zone – known as the Ribeira – is listed a World Heritage Site. The zone’s architecture and tightly packed, colored houses make it a unique and unforgettable location, whereas the landscape, with its bridges and winding river, creates the perfect picture postcard scene.

Also, do not miss the chance to visit the São Francisco Church and the Palácio da Bolsa, two of the most interesting and historically significant buildings in Porto.

As the day draws to a close, take up the invitation to visit the Port Wine Cellars situated on the other side of the river and then start the night with a great dinner, either in Ribeira or in the city center. The truth is, the most difficult thing will choosing from all of the fantastic places on offer. However, one dish that you have to try during your stay is the famous “Franceshina”. Interested?
