The city of Guimarães was chosen to be the European Green Capital in 2026.
This recognition, announced in Valencia, Spain, celebrates the exceptional environmental leadership of the Municipality of Guimarães. Competing with Heilbronn (Germany) and Klagenfurt (Austria), the city excelled in areas such as air quality, biodiversity and the circular economy.
Guimarães’ journey to this achievement reflects more than a decade of climate action. As one of the 100 European cities committed to climate neutrality by 2030, Guimarães has led initiatives such as the Guimarães 2030 Plan. The city is also a proud signatory of the Green City Accord and holds the prestigious Mission Label from the European Commission, actively contributing to the European Union Missions in the areas of oceans, soils and climate change, with numerous projects underway.
Porto and Northern Portugal are extremely proud of this achievement, which aligns perfectly with the sustainability projects and initiatives we have been driving to build a greener future for the region.
Congratulations, Guimarães! Together, we are leading the way towards a sustainable future.
